Centaurea cyanus (Cornflower) seeds - RP Seeds

Centaurea cyanus (Cornflower) seeds

£2.20

Much loved native British cornfield annual with beautiful intensely blue flowers which sadly has declined greatly in numbers in the wld.  Grow with Corn Chamomile, Field Poppy, Corncockle and Corn Marigold to create a classic annual cornfield wildflower meadow.  You can even sow just a small patch or in a tub if space is limited - every little bit helps in the effort to restore more of our native flora!  Very easy to grow, sow outdoors and they will self seed year after year.

GROWING GUIDE

Outdoors:   Sow in March to April where they are to flower in a sunny spot in finely raked,  well drained soil.  Sow the seeds thinly 3mm deep and water regularly in dry weather.  Germination takes 2-3 weeks.  If necessary, thin out the seedlings to 15cm apart when large enough to handle.  Keep well watered as necessary and cut flowers/deadhead regularly to encourage more flowering.

Indoors:  Sow from August to September for early flowers the following year.  Sow on the surface of a moist, good quality seed compost and cover with thin layer of sieved compost or vermiculite.  Place in a propagator or seal in a polythene bag and maintain a temperature of 18-22C.  Germination should occur in 2-3 weeks.  When the seedlings have emerged, gradually increase the ventilation by opening the propagator vents or opening the bag.  When large enough to handle, pot up into small pots (7-9cm) and grow on in cooler conditions in plenty of light but shaded from direct sunlight.  Protect from frost through the winter. In spring, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out, 25-30cms apart in a sunny position.
