Carex pendula (Pendulous Sedge) seeds

Liven up those shady, damp areas of your garden with this very graceful plant with slender, arching stems from which hang long, russet coloured flower spikes reminiscent of catkins. The foliage is also attractive forming a neat clump of mid-green sword-shaped leaves. A useful plant for the back of the border to add height and form. Very easy to grow from seed and excellent for dried flower arrangements.

GROWING GUIDE

Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of year except early to mid summer.  Sow in pots or trays onto the surface of a moist, free-draining good quality seed compost (eg. John Innes) and just cover the seeds with sieved compost or vermiculite. Seal pots/trays in a polythene bag or cover with glass and place in a sheltered place out of direct sunlight (this can be outdoors as long as the temperature is above 10C). Propagate at 10 to 15C in and germination should take place in 7 to 14 days. As soon as some of the seedlings begin to emerge, gradually increase ventilation.

Growing Instructions: Grow the seedlings on, shaded lightly from direct sunlight and when large enough to handle, pot up individually into 8 or 9cm pots. When large enough, plant out into well-drained soil in a semi-shaded or shady position.
