Height: Up to 12m
Position: Full sun
Packet of 5 seeds
Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of the year. Sow in trays or pots of a 50/50 mix of seed compost and sharp sand which should be damp yet not waterlogged. Push the seeds pointed end down into the compost to about half their length and seal the container(s) in a polythene bag or place in a propagator. Maintain an optimum temperature of 20-25C. Germination should start within a few days and can continue up to 12 weeks after sowing.
Check the seeds regularly by very gently pulling them out of the compost – they will form a strong white root first before any shoots appear. Often it will be obvious that a root has formed as the seeds will push themselves out of the soil.
Growing Instructions: Transplant seedlings as soon as you find a root into 1litre (11cm) pots of good quality compost and move them to a cooler position, say 18-21C – average indoor room temperature is fine. Keep them lightly watered with plenty of light.
Aftercare Instructions: In early summer, the young plants can be moved outside to a sunny spot to be grown on. Protect the little trees from frost for the first 2 or 3 years, after which they can be planted out in the garden in a sunny position.
