Ilex crenata (Japanese Holly) seeds
Position: Sun or semi-shade
Packet of 10 seeds
Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of the year. Sow in pots at a depth of about 2mm in a moist, peat-based seed compost, eg. Levington. Place pots in polythene bags to prevent the compost drying out and put in the fridge or other cold place between 2-5C for 12 weeks. Then move to a propagator or seal in a polythene bag and maintain an optimum temperature of 16-21C. Keep the compost just moist at all times. Germination can be slow and erratic but should occur after 30-90 days. As the seedlings emerge, gradually increase ventilation by opening the bag or propagator vents.
Alternatively, sow as above, seal in a polythene bag and place in a cold frame or sheltered part of the garden and let nature take its course as the seasons change. (I personally find this gives the best results)
Growing Instructions: Grow the seedlings on in cooler conditions with plenty of light, but shaded from direct sun, repotting as necessary. Likes a sunny or semi shaded position.
