Will begin producing walnuts at 3-5 years old. Excellent for Bonsai training as it forms a thick trunk which is amazing in miniature.

Position: Sun in any soil
GROWING GUIDE
Pre-sowing Treatment: Soak the seeds for 24 hours.
Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of the year. After soaking, place the nuts in a 50:50 mix of seed compost and sharp sand in a transparent bag with the top loosely tied. Place in the fridge for 4 months to break their dormancy. Check the nuts regularly for signs of germination*. After 4 months, sow the nuts 4cm deep in pots of good quality compost. The pots should be a minimum of 5 litre or 20cm deep to accommodate the big tap root which will develop pretty quickly – deep rose pots are ideal. Maintain at 10-15C and they should start to germinate after about one month but may take much longer.
*If any nuts germinate whilst in the fridge, pot up straight away as above.
The nuts can also be sown in pots as above in autumn and left outside with a transparent cover or in a coldframe. / unheated greenhouse.
Growing Instructions: Grow the seedlings on in their pots for the first growing season taking care to protect them from frost and making sure they are well watered. In their second year, plant out in their final position in late spring in a sunny spot. Protect from rabbits and other tree nibbling wildlife with a tree guard and provide support with a tree stake as necessary.
