Poncirus trifoliata (Japanese Bitter Orange) seeds

Originating in northern China, this spiny shrub with shiny dark green leaves and sweetly-scented white flowers is probably the nearest we will ever get to a hardy Orange! The pretty flowers appear in late spring and often again in autumn, and are followed by rounded 2-3cm orange-like fruits.Makes a very effective, thick, protective hedge and looks great when included in mixed hedging.

Store in the fridge and sow as soon as possible after receipt.

Pre-Sowing Treatment: Soak seeds in cold water for 24 hours.

Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of the year. Sow 6mm deep in moist, seed compost, eg. John Innes in pots or trays. Seal in a polythene bag and place in the fridge or other cold place between 2-5C for 4 weeks. Then, move to a propagator or warm place and maintain an optimum temperature of 19-21C. Germination should occur after 14-21 days. As the seedlings emerge, gradually increase ventilation by opening the bag or propagator vents.

Growing Instructions: Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 9cm pots. Grow on in cooler conditions (about 15C) with plenty of light, but shaded from direct sun and overwinter for the first winter at about 5C. In the late spring, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out in the garden in a sunny position.
