Abutilon vitifolium (Flowering Maple/Mallow) seeds
Beautiful, fast growing, Chilean native shrub with maple like leaves and bowl shaped flowers in a range of mauve blue shades, borne in profusion from early summer. Best grown in a sunny, sheltered spot and protected from frost over winter. Ideal for containers and easy to maintain needing only a light pruning to keep its shape after flowering.
Half Hardy Shrub (to 0C)
Height: to 4m but smaller in a container
Flowers: Early summer onwards
Position: Full sun, sheltered spot with well drained soil
Packet of 20 seeds
Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of year, except early to mid-summer. Sow very thinly on the surface of a moist, free-draining, quality seed compost (eg. Levington/John Innes) and just cover the seed with sieved compost. Propagate at 20-25C in a propagator, greenhouse or on a windowsill sealed in a polythene bag. Germination should take place in 21-30 days and can be erratic, hence the need to sow thinly so that seedlings can be removed without disturbing the compost too much.
Growing Instructions: When the seedlings are large enough to handle, pot up individually into small pots (7-9cm) and grow on in well-ventilated, cooler conditions. Overwinter if necessary in a frost free place. When established, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out in late spring, 90cm apart, in a sheltered, sunny site.
