GROWING GUIDES

Seeds can be sown at any time of year.

• For compost you can use a ready made cactus compost or mix your own with 7 parts compost to 3 parts horticultural grit.  With ready made compost make sure there aren't any twigs or bits of bark in it as these can lead to mould growth.
• Sow the seeds well spaced on the surface, lightly press into the soil but do not cover.
• Seal inside a polythene bag and place on a bright windowsill shaded from direct sun, or place in a propagator.
• Maintain a minimum temperature of 20C.
• Check soil regularly to make sure it doesn't dry out - it needs to be just moist and not overly wet.
• Germination should start after 3 weeks but may take a few months.

• When the seedlings emerge, increase ventilation by opening the bag or propagator vents.
• When large enough to handle, pot seedlings up into small pots and grow on keeping them shaded from very hot sun until more established.
• Cacti like a minimum temperature of 10C, plenty of light and regular watering once the soil is nearly dry. Take care not to overwater them.
