Callistemon salignus (Willow Bottlebrush) seeds
This is a splendid variety of these highly ornamental Australian shrubs with narrow, willow-like leaves and lovely lemon coloured bottle brushes. An unusual feature of this plant is the young foliage which is a delightful shade of pinky-red.
Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit
Hardy Shrub - hardy to about -5C.
Flowers: Late spring/early summer
Packet of 200 seeds
Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of the year. Sow onto the surface of a moist, free-draining peat based seed compost (eg. Levington). Do not cover seed and do not exclude light which is beneficial to germination. Propagate at 13 to 18C in a propagator, greenhouse or on a windowsill indoors sealed in a polythene bag. Germination should begin to take place in 14 to 60 days. As soon as some of the seedlings begin to emerge, ventilate gradually, maintain a temperature of around 13C and take care not to over-water.
Growing Instructions: Grow the seedlings on, shaded lightly from direct sunlight and when large enough to handle, pot up individually into 8 or 9cm pots. When large enough, plant out into well-drained soil in a sunny position. Will need protection from frost. If planted outside, wrap in fleece and if in pots, move to a cold, well-ventilated greenhouse.
