Centaurea cyanus Special Mix (Cornflower) seeds
Easy to grow annual cornflower mixture with pretty flowers in blue, white and pink. Cornflowers are valuable wildflowers attractive to birds, bees and other pollinating insects. Beautiful when grown in drifts. Excellent for cutting.
Height: 90cm, Spread: 30cm
Position: Sun in any soil
Packet of 100 seeds
Outdoors: Sow in March to April where they are to flower in a sunny spot in finely raked, well drained soil. Sow the seeds thinly 3mm deep and water regularly in dry weather. Germination takes 2-3 weeks. If necessary, thin out the seedlings to 15cm apart when large enough to handle. Keep well watered as necessary and cut flowers/deadhead regularly to encourage more flowering.
Indoors: Sow from August to September for early flowers the following year. Sow on the surface of a moist, good quality seed compost and cover with thin layer of sieved compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal in a polythene bag and maintain a temperature of 18-22C. Germination should occur in 2-3 weeks. When the seedlings have emerged, gradually increase the ventilation by opening the propagator vents or opening the bag. When large enough to handle, pot up into small pots (7-9cm) and grow on in cooler conditions in plenty of light but shaded from direct sunlight. Protect from frost through the winter. In spring, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out, 25-30cms apart in a sunny position.
