Echium russicum (Russian Bugloss) seeds

Native to Russia and Eastern Europe, this unusual Echium has beautiful dark red flowers on strong stems and unlike most Echium, is reliably perennial.  Forms neat clumps of fresh green, pointed leaves with stout spikes packed with flowers.  A true magnet for bees who love its nectar rich flowers.  Great for adding height to borders and useful for late summer colour.  Will self seed.

GROWING GUIDE

Sow at any time of year except mid summer as too much heat may result in spindly plants.

• Sow on the surface of a moist, well drained seed compost in pots or trays.
• Seal in a polythene bag and place on a windowsill or in a propagator and maintain a minimum temperature of 20C.
• Germination should occur after 4-8 weeks

• As the seedlings emerge, gradually increase ventilation by opening the propagator vents or the bag.
• Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 9cm pots.
• Grow on in slightly cooler conditions with plenty of light, but shaded from direct sun.
• When established, in mid spring gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions by placing plants outside during the day for 2 weeks before planting out.
