Hardy Tree (protect young trees from frost for the first few winters)
Height: 20m if not pruned
Position: Full sun and fertile, well-drained soil
Packet of 20 seeds
GROWING GUIDE
Pre-sowing Treatment: Pour several lots of hot water (not boiling) over seeds, then leave to soak for 10 hours.
Sowing Instructions: Can be sown at any time of year. Sow in pots or containers of a good seed compost (eg. John Innes) mixed with vermiculite or perlite and just cover the seeds with sieved compost, vermiculite or perlite. Seal in a polythene bag or place in a propagator and maintain at 18 to 21C until after germination which usually takes 14-30 days.
Growing Instructions: When seedlings have emerged, open the bag or propagator vents and grow on in cooler conditions (about 15C). When large enough to handle, pot up the seedlings into 7.5 or 9cm pots and grow on out of direct sunlight, protecting the young trees from frost for the first few winters. Harden off in spring and plant out in a sunny position.
