Native British Bluebell very familiar to everyone, forming beautiful deep blue carpets in woodlands in spring. Loves damp shade and will naturally spread where happy.

English Bluebell numbers have been dwindling over the years and are now a protected species. Their biggest threat is the invasive Spanish Bluebell which have been left to spread and can easily overwhelm our native bluebells.

Do your best to fight off the threat and grow your own English Bluebells.

GROWING GUIDE

These seeds have a dormancy which needs to be broken before they will germinate - they need a cold spell which simulates the changing seasons.  They can be sown either indoors or out.

Sowing Instructions:

Outdoors:  Sow from early autumn to winter either where they are to flower or in pots or trays of compost in a coldframe, unheated greenhouse or outdoors in a sheltered spot.  If sowing in flowering position, press the seeds into the soil, cover over lightly and water.  In pots or trays, use any good quality seed compost, wet the compost first and allow to drain, sow the seeds then cover lightly with compost, perlite or vermiculite.

Indoors: Sow at any year as above in pots or trays, cover with a clear lid / polythene bag or place in a propagator and keep at 18-22C for 4 weeks.  Water lightly as needed to keep the compost moist.  After 4 weeks, move to the fridge for 6 weeks, then bring back into the warmth. Germination can be slow and erratic and may take several months.

Growing Instructions:  Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm pots and grow on at around 15C repotting as necessary.  In spring, acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 2 weeks by placing them outdoors during the day, then plant out in a shady or semi-shaded position.
