Kniphofia rooperi (Red Hot Poker) seeds
Native to South Africa, this robust perennial bears stout flower spikes topped with red and yellow poker flowers above lush, strappy foliage. Great for adding height and form to borders and a must for a jungle, exotic or mediterranean garden.
Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Flowers: August to October
Height: 1.2m, Spread: 90cm
Position: Sun in well drained soil
Packet of 20 seeds
Sowing Instructions: Can be sown at any time of year. Sow at a depth of about 3mm in pots or trays of moist seed compost, then place in a propagator or seal in a polythene bag and maintain a temperature of 20-25C. Reducing the soil temperature at night aids germination which takes 10-30 days. As the seedlings emerge, gradually increase ventilation by opening the bag or propagator vents.
They can also be sown outdoors during summer in a sheltered spot out of direct sunlight.
Growing Instructions: Pot on when large enough to handle into 7-9cm pots and grow in cooler conditions. Overwinter if necessary in frost-free conditions, ie. greenhouse or insulated coldframe. In spring, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions, before planting out when all risk of frost has passed, 70cm apart in a sunny position.
