Leycesteria formosa (Himalayan Honeysuckle) seeds
Flowers: Summer to early autumn
Height and spread: 2m, but can be kept smaller by pruning shoots back to ground level.
Position: Sun or semi shade
Packet of 30 seeds
Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of the year. Sow on the surface of a moist, sandy peat-based seed compost, eg. Levington in pots or trays (mix 3 parts compost to one part sand). Just cover the seed with finely sieved compost. Seal in a polythene bag or place in a propagator and maintain an optimum temperature of 15-18C. Germination should occur after 30-60 days. As the seedlings emerge, gradually increase ventilation by opening the bag or propagator vents.
Growing Instructions: Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 9cm pots. Grow on in cooler conditions (about 10-13C) with plenty of light, but shaded from direct sun and overwinter, if necessary, at about 5C. When established, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and grow on until mature enough to be planted out in the garden in a sunny or semi shaded position.
