Passiflora edulis f edulis (Purple Passion Flower) seeds
Vigorous climber native to South America with spectacular, bowl shaped, purple and white flowers in summer, followed by dark purple fruit. Robust enough to be grown outdoors where it is root hardy to -10C and is best mulched or protected with a cloche over winter. Also happy indoors in a bright spot where it will remain evergreen.
Although germination can be erratic, Passiflora are easy to raise from seed, very vigorous and do well in pots.
Hardy Climber (root hardy to -10C)
Position: Sun in well drained soil
Height: to 5m
Packet of 10 seeds
Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of the year and as soon as possible after receipt. Sow in pots at a depth of 6mm into a good free draining damp seed compost, seal in a polythene bag and maintain at about 21C. Keep the compost moist, but not over wet. Germination can take anywhere from 7 days to 3 months. If any seed still haven’t germinated after 3 months, transfer the container in its bag to the fridge for a further 3 months. Check regularly for germination and remove from the fridge immediately if it does occur. After 3 months return the container to 21C and germination should occur.
Growing Instructions: When seedlings are large enough to handle, pot up individually into 7.5cm pots and grow on in a coldframe (in summer, in a shady place as cool as possible), and plant out 30cm apart the following spring in moist, loamy soil. For young plants (>3 yrs), and in cold regions, protect from frost with a mulch/fleece.
