Well known British native annual wildflower and a common sight on grasslands, meadows, roadsides and dunes.  Loves poor soil and plenty of sun.  Yellow Rattle is unusual in that it grows as a semi-parasitic plant among grasses and uses their roots for nourishment.  This weakens the grasses and stops them overwhelming the often more delicate wilflower species thus making it an essential addition to any wildflower meadow.  Yellow Rattle allows a more varied range of wildflower species to be grown and greatly adds to the chances of successful establishment.

These seeds have a dormancy which needs to be broken by a cold period before they will germinate properly.

Sow in autumn to early winter.  Sow in pots or trays on the surface of moist compost then just cover with a fine sprinkling of compost.

Maintain in a coldframe, unheated greenhouse or in a sheltered spot outdoors – cover the tray with a transparent lid to keep the critters out.

Sow directly into their flowering position.  Clear all weeds,  rake the soil finely, scatter seeds the lightly press them into the soil.  Water with a fine spray.

To prolong flowering and prevent self seeding, remove the spent flowers just as the petals start to fall.  Otherwise, when flowering has finished in autumn, remove the dead plants, shake well to scatter the seed and rake the area lightly.  New plants will grow the following spring.
