Sabal minor (Dwarf Palmetto Palm) seeds
Hardy Palm (to -15C)
Height: to 2m
Position: Sun and well drained soil
Packet of 10 seeds
Sowing Instructions: Sow at any time of the year. Sow individually in small pots of moist, peat-based seed compost, eg. Levington, mixed 50:50 with vermiculite. Cover lightly with 3mm of compost or vermiculite. Seal pots in a polythene bag and place in a propagator or other warm place, eg. on a sunny windowsill above a radiator. Maintain an optimum temperature of 30C during the day and 20C at night. Germination can be erratic but should take place in 1-3 months.
Growing Instructions: As the seedlings emerge, gradually increase ventilation by opening the propagator vents or the polythene bag. Grow the seedlings on, re-potting as necessary, keeping them well watered. If planting outside, wait until they are at least 2 years old and protect with bubble wrap and a fleece jacket in winter.
